to some of my music, possibly for the first time. some kind of self-introduction
is in order.
I've been writing and recording music for twenty-six years and remain as fired-up about it now as ever. Singing and songs often make sense for me out of the confusion of being alive on this planet and at this time. In 1991 I founded my own record company, Fie! (an old English expression pronounced like "Fly" and meaning, roughly, "Bah!" or "Enough of all that!"); since then I have, of course, been in the happy position of having absolute control over my own work. This CD consists of a selection of songs from the Fie catalogue. Not all of them are from the ' 90s: two old albums of mine from the ' 80s, "Enter K" and "Patience" are represented here, as is "Loops and Reels", a work of sonic experimentation from the same period. Since they came back into my ownership Fie! has released all three of these on compact disc for the first time. the other songs are from my newer recordings, up to but excluding "X my Heart" which was released in 1996. Since this collection is intended as an introduction to rather than a summation of my work the selection of songs covers a wide range and may well keep casual listeners on their toes. Deliberately so: I believe that both making and listening to music should be active rather than passive things. Well, in any case, it's clear that many of my beliefs about music are represented rather better in the laser pits of this compact disc than in any way the written word could express, so I'll leave you to form your own conclusions. I hope that some of this music will encourage you to explore further or at the very least will mean something to you; it means a lot to me. |
